I don't normally do these things, but I thought this was a good one.

1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (22/11/1963)
In that life, I was a small roe deer living in the Forest of Dean and was not particularly interested in politics.

2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (18/5/1980)
Two years old and busy being jealous of my little sister, even though she hadn’t quite been born. Probably covering everything in our house in Dollar in paint and chocolate.

3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (28/1/1986)
Eight years old and living in Shropshire. Probably at school weighing sand, programming one of those logo turtle things to draw a wonky line which was meant to be a house or playing army with those stupid keyrings that make all the different bomb noises...

4. The Hillsborough disaster. (15/4/1989)
This is the first one I can properly remember hearing about. If I was at school, I would have been listening to Mr. Dale make really crap Easter-related puns (Egg-cellent, egg-static...) and making easter cards from pastel coloured card and tissue paper - and if it was the holidays, I would have been BORED and nagging the parents to take me somewhere fun.

5. When the Berlin Wall fell (7/11/1989)
Hmm. That was the start of my time at Secondary School. I can remember watching a bit about it on TV, but that stuff doesn’t really matter to you when you’re 11 and they keet showing the same guy knocking down the same bit of wall over and over again, so I probably made something interesting using lots of glue and plaster bandages instead.

6. When Nelson Mandela was released from gaol. (11/2/1990)
Listening to Lucy D pining over Richard Hagan and trying to stop her leaving love notes in his bag. Worrying about the colour of Mr. Cains’ mood shirts, watching Mr. J cut up polystrene with a hotwire and not watching the news because guinea pigs were better.

7. When Thatcher resigned (22/11/1990)
Oh God. I don’t know. At school, still. Cooking horrible things in Home Ec and sawing up acrylic in Design Technology. Using watercolour paint like oils to do naff pictures of parrots.

8. When the Gulf War began (16/1/1991)
Er... Secondary School. In Mr. Bishop’s English class reading p.72 of ‘To kill a mockingbird’. No. That’s a lie. It was ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller. Silly me.

9. When Princess Di was killed (31/8/1997)
I remember this one quite well. It was Sunday. I was at home by myself on holiday from University and all the TV channels were showing the news. Only none of them actually said who had died for about an hour. Female, royal – you would expect it to be the Queen Mother wouldn’t you - so I was really surprised that it was Diana.
I was actually quite resentful that her death meant that there was nothing on TV when I was stuck in the house with no car to go out in and no books to read. BO-ORING!

10. When Omagh was bombed (15/8/1998)
I would have been on holiday from University, so somewhere in Shropshire, I expect. (Although I might have been busy beating the infuriating Ratboy in Surrey...) I can’t remember what I was doing yesterday, let alone that long ago...

11. When Bush was first announced President (7/11/2000)
At work in Woodfieldside with the Museums service or more likely putting together an exhibition at the Winding House Museum in New Tredegar.

12. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (11/9/2001)
Ooooh. This was a good one. I was very bored at work and wasted the whole afternoon looking at various news websites, listening to the radio and getting phone reports from people with TV... Then I drove home early, went out for a meal with a film crew and got very drunk at their expense while they made a documentary about us getting drunk. (It was a tuesday: Welsh Club!)

13. When the Queen Mother died (30/3/2002)
Wow. Was it really that long ago already? Playing on the internet At work in the library in Pontllanfraith, I expect...

14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (1/2/2003)
Well, that was a Saturday, so I was probably wandering round Cardiff shopping for stuff, at home reading some book about museums and swearing at my coursework or sleeping off a night of clubbing on someone’s sofa somewhere.

Pick one and tell me what you were doing then. Ah g'wan.

I can't remember what I was doing when I heard about Hillsborough, but I do remember that the following Tuesday one of our deputy heads (a Liverpool fan) gave a really moving assembly. The effect was somewhat spoilt when we began leaving the hall in a certain amount of disarray and the other deputy head shouted at us to calm down or we'd have 'another bloody Hillsborough!'

Similarly, I happened to be studying German the year the Berlin Wall came down. A couple of days before it happened my German teacher confidently predicted that Germany wouldn't be unified in her lifetime.

I do remember what I was doing on 11/9, I was on jury service and was sat in the jury waiting room watching the TV coverage.

7. When Thatcher resigned (22/11/1990)

UI was in a music lesson at secondary school. Our music teacher Mr Rook (with a fondness for elgar, and who grew a white beard trimmed to a point to disguide the fact that he actually had no chin) stopped the lesson and bought a television in so that we could watch her stop out in defeat, and then sang "ding dong the witch is dead" very loudly, in a surprising baritone. He obviously had very strong political views!

what i was doing...

9. When Princess Di was killed (31/8/1997)
i got up quite early that morning (it was a sunday i believe), and i went downstairs to get my weekend helping of 'trouble' on sky (i was a mere 13 years old at the time, so i can be forgiven). i remember switching the TV on and the first thing i saw was the tunnel and the crashed car and then some guy said "princess diana was killed last night". i was totally shocked (i had watched 'that' interview on the TV)...and i ran out to tell my dad, and although he never really liked her, he thought i was kidding...it was a very odd morning.

12. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (11/9/2001)
this one's quite funny actually. i was at leamington college on a break, and my mate gay anthony got a phone call from his mum, and he said "fucking hell, a plane's hit the world trade centre" and i remember thinking...is that bad?? problem was i didn't actually know what the world trade centre was, or its significance, and wrote it off as a terrible accident. ah how naieve i was. what really pissed me off was when i got home, my parents were going on about how they saw the live footage of the second plane hitting, 'cause they'd both had the day off. it might be a bit grim, but i'd have quite liked to have seen that.

13. When the Queen Mother died (30/3/2002)
i forgot all about that. seriously.

Yeah, fine. I don't know if I've got the software to read it, but we'll know someone who does.

Thanks very much, by the way.

6/9/97 When Diana was put in the ground (I know you said died) it was Marquies' birthday! We were at Fury's place (scabby flat!) & had decided to make sure we gave him a good day, so we turned the tv off & played lots of fun games! I got him a cake in the shape of a cheque made out for a million.....oh the trauma....cash it in or eat it!! ;) Good job we ate it really cos I couldn't have covered it!! ;)
11/9/2001 When the world trade centre was destroyed I remember I was at work & noone beleived it! We got a call from Jayne who was off that day & we thought she was joking.....we had to go out & get batteries for the radio so we could hear the news in the tea room!

When I were a wee lad we didn't have broadband.

The only three I can remember anything specific about hearing about them are:

Whenever, 1990 - Thatcher resigning.

I was in Primary School at the time, and we sat in the library (actually a wider piece of the corridor with books on three sides) where a television had been wheeled (also used for school tv stuff like that thing with Wordie, and Look Around You ;) ). And then we watched the telly for a bit. The other things I remember about the library was how everyone liked this book which was a book to teach things about the human body and included cartoons of naked people, and that someone once sat on a chair there while one of the legs was right on my big toe nail. I think I'd been resting the chair on it or something. A while later, half the nail came off when the injuty site had grown along a bit.

1997 - Di dies.

I was awoken from my slumber by my mother who informed me that Princess Di had died that morning. I said "Really?". That's all I can remember of that. My bed has not had much excitement as the Primary School library, but I was sick on it once.

11/9/2001 - Twin towers thingy

On this day, I was at home in Hertford prior to returning to uni to fail my degree. Me and a couple of school friends payed a visit to my secondary school to say hi to the teachers and whatnot. After having gone there, we went to the pub across the road, where everyone was quite interested in the television. I thikn by this point the second plane had crashed, since it was about 3 in the afternoon. Though it might not have done. So obviously this was the talking point for the rest of the pub crawl. Another thing about this pub is that it is great for after 'A' level exams.

.9. When Princess Di was killed (31/8/1997)

We were touring castles in East Lothian, near Edinburgh and at castle no. 3 of the day the flag was at half mast, so my dad asked why. The attendent said it was because Princess Di had died, and my dad fell about laughing thinking it was a massive joke. It was actually really embarrassing to see the look of shock on the guy's face :o

Hello

I do hope you don't mind the comments of a random LJer.

I happened upon a post of yours (at [livejournal.com profile] museumpeople). Seeing your icon I got curious and wandered over to say Hi.

Again I do hope you don't mind.
