Heh, I just looked at it and thought, "I bet's that what I'd get if I tried to make a simple wedding band". Didn't even know sawing as such was involved!
Sawing straight strips, Heating them and treating them with acid to soften them, Putting them through a rolling mill to make them long and flat, Sawing them to shape, Filing the edges smooth, Sanding the surfaces, Soldering the two pieces together, Acid treating them again, Curving them round to make the two ends meet, Filing the join flat to make it meet exactly Soldering the join together, Filing the join smooth, Hammering the ring until it was round, Cleaning with emery paper, Polishing in a barrel polisher.
You should definitley give it a go. It's good fun: lots of fire and acid and hammering and stuff! You need a lot of specialised equipment so taking an evening class seems the best way to try it.
The only hard bit I could forsee would be if you wanted to put a screw thread on to anything, I think silver's a bit soft to do that.
Incidentally, watch out if you decide to make piercing jewellery from silver and any other metal (eg stainless steel or titanium), two different metals + sweat = battery, which isn't a pleasant thing to be wearing (and it corrodes really quickly too).
do you know sandy from birmingham? he has been to compulsion in the past - good friend of mine, he makes jewellery, infact he made me a ring whilst we were an item that looked very similar to that one. brings back memories. awww
That looks very cool, I've always wanted to try making my own - as I'm quite fussy about jewelry - sadly though I'm too lazy to actually do anything that's remotely like work though :)
The only questions are: does text show-up on it when you put it into a fire?
